NCERT Class 6 Geography(The Earth) - 2. Latitudes and Longitudes

The earth is in a spherical shape flattened at the poles and bulged in the middle. The axis of the earth passes through the two points , north pole and south pole. The earth moves around this axis from west to east.

To locate any place on the earth , there should be some method . For that purpose , there are certain imaginary lines.

  1. Latitudes
  2. Longitues
1. Latitudes :
-------------
There is an imaginary line which divides the globe into two equal halves and that line is called Equator . The northern part of the equator is known as northern hemisphere and southern part is known as southern hemisphere. The imaginary lines drawn parallel to the equator are known as parallels of latitude.

Some important parallels of latitude are the following :

1. Tropic of cancer - 23.5 degree north of equator
2. Tropic of capricorn - 23.5 degree south of equator.
3. Arctic circle - 66.5 degree north of equator.
4. Antarctic circle - 66.5 degree south of equator.
